As part of Illovo Sugar Africa, we have sponsored two of our employees to take part in the Mount Kilimanjaro expedition, which will eventually see them summit Mount Kilimanjaro, the continent’s highest mountain range, on Mandela Day. Trek4Mandela is leading the expedition.

The initiative is designed to raise awareness as well as tackle the challenge of period poverty prevalent in various countries across Africa. The Company aims to partner with Women organisations that produce reusable sanitary towels in the country.

The shared value programme will promote and further develop skills of the women, grow business volume while meeting the need of many girls from the various schools across the country. The added benefits of reusable towels are that the girls do not have to struggle with disposal, and they will be guaranteed use for at least a year. This is a sure way to help keep the girls in school.

Chishala Musonda and George Moonga, the two sponsored Zambia Sugar employees, join 16 other individuals from the different African Countries where Illovo operates, on the Kilimanjaro climb.

The duo, who were seen off for Tanzania at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, have undergone training in the Drakensberg Mountain range in South Africa, before setting out to climb the daunting Mount Kilimanjaro.

Standing at 5,895 metres above sea-level, and 4,900 metres above its plateau base, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa.

Located in Tanzania, it is also the highest single free-standing mountain above sea-level across the globe.

We wish our climbers all the best!
