As Zambia Sugar Plc turns 60 years this October, it is befitting that we have commissioned bituminous standard roads for the first time in our history.
The 4.5km bituminous road was commissioned, Wednesday, by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development and Mazabuka Area Member of Parliament, Honourable Gary Nkombo and the Zambia Sugar Managing Director, Mr. Oswald Magwenzi. Speaking at this memorable event, Hon. Nkombo, who was guest of honour, said he was elated to be part of the development and praised Zambia Sugar’s commitment to working with the Government.
Hon. Nkombo was pleased to see the fruition of this significant project within a short space of time and commended Zambia Sugar for remaining resolute all throughout the process. The Minister said: “Ladies and Gentlemen, I am informed that this development is the first phase in the development programme of Zambia Sugar’s Nakambala Estate. I am aware that the Company has plans to upgrade the roads in the townships and this will be ongoing.
Therefore, this first phase should be seen as a commitment to this ongoing programme.” He also commended Zambia Sugar for supporting Government in the fight against Cholera at national-level with a colossal contribution of K3.5 million in medical supplies, cleaning materials and food stuffs, together with the K1.6 million worth of medical supplies contribution to the Mazabuka District Health Board.
And Mr. Magwenzi said: “Today is a dream come true for all of us. It is a special day for all of us! We are addressing safety for all road users, including pedestrians. We are also addressing the need to make our area where we live and work a beautiful estate, which brings us great pride. The roads benefit, not only residents of the estate, but all visitors from within Mazabuka and outside.”
He went on to say that the commissioning of the Nakambala Road was a beginning of an ongoing road upgrade programme covering estate roads and others in a bid to live the Company’s vision to make Nakambala a beautiful and safe estate. Mr. Magwenzi added: “This is the first phase and we will continue to upgrade our roads as we pursue our vision.”
Zambia Sugar will continue to partner with Government and the local authorities and extend this programme beyond Nakambala to impact the entire district. The Nakambala Road commissioning was attended by our staff, government officials including Mazabuka District Administrative Officer, Timothy Mulenga; Mazabuka Deputy Mayor, Saul Mwiinga; Mazabuka Director Housing and Social Services, Ms. Ireen Kayuni and other Mazabuka District local government officials.
